Deputy Paul Schene under Federal Investigation

The Seattle Post Intelligencer reports that Federal Prosecutors have begun an investigation into the beating of 15-year old Malika Calhoun by Deputy Paul Schene .

From the Seattle PI:

Federal prosecutors have launched a civil rights investigation of a King County sheriff's deputy who was shown on a videotape beating a 15-year-old girl in a holding cell after she kicked a tennis shoe at his legs.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Kelly Harris said the release Friday of a video that shows the November beating prompted prosecutors to launch the inquiry. "It (the video) definitely drives home the fact that we need to look at it," he said.

The video shows Deputy Paul Schene rushing into the cell and slamming Malika Calhoun against the wall, throwing her facedown to the floor and punching her before lifting her to her feet by her hair and leading her out of the cell.

If Schene is prosecuted and found guilty of depriving Calhoun of her civil rights while acting in his official capacity, he could face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, Harris said.

The cop is trying to claim he suffered an injury that required treatment from the girl's kicked shoe. She flipped the shoe at him, it was not enough to cause even a bruise. he injured his shin on the metal toilet when he assaulted her. Lock this thug up and throw away the key.

I'm still not sure how I'm going to deal with the rare occasion when someone comes to this blog and spews nonsense. While I have deleted some comments which are purely spam and the one above encompasses both the spam and smelly garbage category, I will leave it for the time being.

It serves to remind that there are some complete blithering idiots in this world and no amount of reason will overcome total depravity.

George if you want to come back when you mature and gain some wisdom, by all means please do. We then may engage in a productive discussion. Until then, any further nonsense will result in deletion of comments and banning from the blog - I'm sure you won't mind.

I am from seattle and have been a victim of police brutality at the age of eleven.I and others in my community have a deep hatred for corrupt thug cops. I often wonder why something more is not being to done to hold these thugs with badges responsible for their actions. I personally believe that if a trusted law enforcement official is caught breaking the law that he swore to uphold that person should suffer extreme penalties and brought to justice. We as americans want to trust the police, they are necessary, but time after time there illegal actions go unpunished. law enforcement officials should not be above the law. What can we do as concerned citizens is the greatest question. i remember as a kid looking at the policeman as a hero and someone to admire, now kids look at police as something to be afraid of. Our constitution is supposed to protect us instead it keeps us in our place and ignorant. I am afraid that we will have more people join law enforcement agencies with the thought that they will have absolute power. This is a powerful signal to all the cowards to join law enforcement to get there manhood back. Our president has done nothing to address this important issue, and i highly doubt that he will, as he is just a puppet like all the others.

This is a sad story. We only get to see a blurb. Cops have to assess for dangerousness and his deduction of many years serving us in the elite military and in the sheriff's department, was to us much force. Many of us who have had to assess dangerousness understand that a video doesn't show what came before and the tough decisions one has to make. The smaller the person, often the more force needed (they can be the most dangerous/fight back and injure the most). How quick we are to judge Officer Schene. A Latino man who only wanted to protect and serve...

unfortunately, you are mistaken. I was a victim of DEPUTY PAUl schene's brutal and unjustifiable behavior. He is a blood thirsty coward acting with impunity under the color of law. cowards run in packs, birds of a feather flock together.ignorance is bliss, this type of behavior by our law enforcement has been and will continue to be a part of american life as long as we have gang-banging thug cops who try to make excuses and justify a wrong. If you cannot handle the job that YOU and only YOU signed up for VOLUNTARILY, than you should quit. before you end up trying to justify a murder, beating, or lying in the courtroom.PAUL SCHENE is the poster child for coward on patrol. I can not say that all cops are crooked, corrupt, liars, and racist, but the way cops think sure does support it. wrong is wrong no matter who does the wrong. A police officer should be held up to the standards of uprightness, levelness, integrity and the courage to stand up for humanity. It is often perceived that when you become an officer it is a us v. them mentality that must be embraced. an officers job is to serve the majority not just the minority. Look he finally got caught he has been beating people, and violating peoples rights for years, he is notorious in the streets as a hooligan, a criminal will recognize a criminal.. Paul schene is a criminal plain and simple. I Hope and pray to the one true GOD that he is never allowed to beat, maim, murder, or lie on anyone again in the name of selective justice.

My husband is incarcerated and there is always abuse - it is an abuse of power and authority. Sorry, but criminals have rights, it's guaranteed under a document called the constitution! You are blind if you think power doesn't go to people’s heads; Many cops and correctional officer have issues… there have been studies which prove what happens to people to who gain power or authority over another human being. This guy was investigated for excessive force in early 2000’s, he killed a guy - shot him 11 times-though he was cleared of excessive force. The city should be sued! I can not believe his co workers weren’t aware of his rage… They are all culpable by allowing his behavior to continue and be ignored.

I can't believe he has the courage to defend himself after these shocking images. Even if the shoe reached him, this is no way to behave. I can't find the words to say how disgusted i feel now after watching these images. I think it's impossible for him to get away with this.
